DESCRIPTION
The design for a mini-city consisted of nine towers connected by sky
bridges at the upper floors. The 2.4M SF program included 750
apartments, public green space, commercial zones, hotel, cinemateque,
kindergarten, Montessori school, and underground parking
The concrete braced frame towers had large cantilevered floors at the
upper levels which were contracted using steel framing. Due to the
seismic demands in Beijing, the bridges were designed isolated from the
towers using friction pendulum isolators.
At the center of the site was a geometrically complex Cinema and porous
roofed Kindergarten structure. The design was carried through design
development and CABR and Capital Group of China completed
construction documents Photos are from Steven Holl Architects and
CABR. The structural model pictures are from Erik Nelson while with Guy
Nordenson and Associates.

The New Yorker, Paul Goldberger, Jun 30, 2008 FORBIDDEN CITIES
The Link Hybrid's "most notable feature is a bridge - or, rather, bridges - high in the air. (...) The bridges are spectacular, inside and out"
Vanity Fair, Kurt Andersen, August 2008 FROM MAO TO WOW!
The Linked Hybrid "true to its nerdy name, has an enthusiastic Erector Set complexity, and only gets more interesting as you wander
through. It's a deeply ingenious piece of architecture, rich with ideas and virtuoso engineering."
